Our nurse will be performing a FeNO ( Fractional exhaled Nitric Oxide) test during your appointment – It is a simple test to check how much nitric oxide is in your breath. It is helpful to diagnose asthma and if you are known to have asthma, this is to ensure you are taking the correct type of inhalers

Preparation:

Please avoid hot drinks, caffeine, smoking and alcohol for at least 1 hour before the test

Please do NOT have nitrate-rich food like celery, leek, spinach, lettuce, beetroot, green leafy vegetables for 3 hours before the test

Please do NOT exercise for an hour before the test

Procedure:

You will breathe into a small disposable plastic/cardboard mouth piece attached to the machine. You will breathe in deeply with mouth open and then breathe out slowly until your lungs are empty.

It will take around 10 seconds for adults and 6 seconds for children. You might have to repeat it up to 3 times.

The results will be shown on the monitor and the nurse will advise you accordingly.
